“Freight Is My Competitive Advantage.”
“Freight is a competitive advantage for us.”
I recently heard this from a prospective client.
The cold hard fact is that today’s carriers perform at the same level (some admittedly better than others). The only variable is the costs they bill you under.
So unless you don’t charge your customers for freight or accidentally eat charges (freight quoted vs. actual costs) when it comes to expediting product due to production challenges, the only competitive advantage you have over your closet competitor is deeper pockets to pay the carrier invoice without asking your customer to reimburse you the difference.
Unless of course you have your own private fleet and staffed to drug test drivers, maintaining logs or buy fuel in bulk quantities and manage daily maintenance items for your equipment you are not in the transportation business! The only similarity you have with a carrier is you share a common business principal. You both have to make money to continue operations.
